An original hymn about the importance of doing.  Text by Kathryn W. Hales below.

Watch on YouTube: That's What Ships Are For

The ship is in the harbor

The sails tied to the mast,

The anchors holds down firmly,

The ship is safe at last.

But sitting in the harbor,

No flags flying high aloft,

A pilot’s wheel gets rusty,

Decks begin to rot.

Commerce is at a standstill,

No freight is in the hold,

Many hands are left empty,

With no goods bought or sold.

Ships are built for sailing

Across oceans broad and wide,

Not for rest in sheltered bays,

With a dock at their hulled sides.

Though security is so tempting,

To remain snug against the shore,

Lift your anchor, spread your sails;

For that’s what ships are for.

Have faith to leave your harbor

To launch forth upon the sea,

Your sails furled wide and strong,

Become what you’re meant to be.

Adventures sure will meet you,

When through storms you’re sorely tossed,

Focus on the North Star

And you will never be lost.

Greater happiness awaits you

At your journey’s end,

The Master Mariner is your pilot;

He’ll always be your friend.

Though security is so tempting,

To remain snug against the shore,

Lift your anchor, spread your sails;

For that’s what ships are for.
